Being Fat And Fit Won’t Save You From Diabetes: Study

Being Fat And Fit Won’t Save You From Diabetes: Study

“Being physically active is not enough if you want to avoid type 2 diabetes. The odds of developing type 2 diabetes were even greater among people who were overweight or obese, and inactive…The data tells us that being overweight or obese remains the major factor in developing type 2 diabetes and while being active is important, it’s not a ‘get out of jail free’ card for people carrying excess weight. Maintaining a healthy weight by adopting healthy lifestyle behaviours, including a healthy diet, is the best way to prevent type 2 diabetes.”

I find it interesting that a study like this is always used to demonise fat people. Notice especially the last sentence which assumes (as usual) that if you are fat it’s because you don’t “adopt healthy lifestyle behaviours”. Ummm, what is exercising if not a “healthy lifestyle behaviour”? The study could also be interpreted as correlational. That is, the things in a person’s genetics that cause Diabetes 2 could be the same things that lead to a person being overweight DESPITE exercising and “adopting healthy lifestyle behaviours”. Why is this perspective never mentioned in such articles??
